John Maughan was ratified as Offaly Senior Football Manager at the September County Board Meeting.
A native of Crossmolina, Co. Mayo. Married with four adult children, his youngest son Johnny played corner back on the Mayo U20 team this year.
John to secondary school in the famed Carmelite College, Moate where he was on the winning Hogan cup team in 1980. At third level he attended NUIG where he won two Sigerson Cups titles.
His began his inter county playing career, with Mayo, at minor level where he lined out at centre back for two years with the Mayo minors, winning two Connacht medals. He then progressed to U21 level and was full back on the All-Ireland winning team of 1983. His senior career saw he line out at centre back on the Mayo team that won a Connacht championship in 1985. Travelled as an All Star replacement to the US in 1986.
Unfortunately his football career was cut short when in 1987, he picked up a serious knee injury which forced him to retire from the game.
His managerial career began in 1988 when he took charge of the Defence forces football team for two years 1988 -1990. His first stint at inter-county management saw him take charge of the Clare football team for 4 years 1990 – 1994. During that period The Banner County won the All-Ireland ‘B’ final, gained promotion from Div. 4 to Div 2 and won a first Munster title since 1917 when they had a famous victory over Kerry in the 1992 decider. He then went on to manage his native county for two periods 1995- 1999 and 2003 -2005 (7 years). Under his stewardship Mayo played in 3 All Ireland senior finals, 1996, 1997 and 2004. He also brought Mayo u21’s to the All-Ireland final in 2004.
John managed his native Crossmolina to the All-Ireland club final in 2003.
In 1994 he managed to return to the playing fields, after a 7 year absence, and played centre back on the Castlebar Mitchell’s team that contested the All-Ireland club final that year.
John also managed both Fermanagh and Roscommon, bringing his senior inter county management terms to 14 years. He took charge of his native Crossmolina again more recently for a three year period. He coached Achill to a Connacht junior final a few years ago and is currently managing Lahardane McHale’s, where his brother is chairman. They won their first ever county and Connacht junior title last year. John has also managed Castlebar Mitchell’s underage teams for five years, up to and including 2016.
John served as an army officer for 18 years 1980 -1999. He resides in Castlebar and is currently employed as a procurement and efficiency officer by Mayo County Council.
