It’s a hectic period for all Offaly GAA teams and the intensity steps up a level this weekend, with both Senior teams commencing their Championship campaigns.
On Saturday, the senior hurlers play their opening Joe McDonagh Cup match of 2023 versus Laois at 3.00pm in Glenisk O’Connor Park. Fresh from their victory in the Division 2A League final, it’s expected that there will be a big crowd at the venue to support the Faithful County.
Offaly have been hit with injuries this year, including to the influential Oisin Kelly and Ross Ravenhill, but will still be hopeful of getting off to a winning start in a competitive Championship which also features Kildare, Kerry, Carlow and Down.
Twenty-four hours later, Offaly senior footballers travel to Longford to take on the home side in Glennon Bros Pearse Park.
The Sunday afternoon encounter is expected to be closely fought, coming not long after Offaly beat Longford by one point at the same venue in the Allianz League.
Offaly won four games out of seven in Division 3 to consolidate their position and are determined to win on Sunday, which would set up a home quarter-final versus Meath two weeks later.
