Offaly senior footballers removed whatever slight risk of relegation there was by defeating Longford on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-16 at Glennon Bros Pearse Park on Sunday, 5th March.
The Faithful County still have some hope of promotion from Division 3 should they win their remaining games against Tipperary (away) and Down (home), but they would need other results to go in their favour also.
But there was satisfaction at the final whistle that Liam Kearns’ side picked up their third win of the campaign, following earlier victories over Antrim and Fermanagh.
Offaly started well with an early Bernard Allen goal but the sides were level at the break, 1-9 apiece. The key score for Offaly was a goal by substitute Jack Bryant midway through the second half. Offaly were four points up approaching full time but Longford hit three in a row and Offaly had to prevent the home side from snatching an equaliser in injury-time.
The next game against Tipperary is at Semple Stadium, Thurles on Saturday, 18th March at 6.00pm.
