Shinrone’s snatch and grab raid in the Molloy Environmental Systems Senior Hurling Championship semi-final was the big talking point from the weekend’s action in Offaly.
Belmont looked on course to reach their first ever SHC final when holding a comfortable lead in the second half at St Brendan’s Park on Saturday. But Shinrone hit back with late goals from DJ McLoughlin and Jason Sampson to progress to their first final since 1960 by 2-18 to 0-23.
They will be joined in the decider by Kilcormac-Killoughey, who deservedly defeated Birr by 1-19 to 0-17 at O’Connor Park on Sunday. The only goal of the game was struck by Alex Kavanagh early on, and K-K led from start to finish, although Birr did finish strongly.
Also on Sunday, Tullamore returned to the top flight of Offaly hurling with a 3-9 to 0-9 victory over Clara in the Senior B final. Goals were scored by Ciaran Egan, Shane Kelly and Shane Dooley during a dominant display.
The other final over the weekend was the Intermediate replay, and Shamrocks made no mistake with a 4-24 to 0-9 victory over Seir Kieran, featuring a hat-trick of goals by David O’Toole Greene.
O’Connor Park will host the Offaly Senior Hurling Championship final on Sunday, 2nd October.
